SEOUL, Sept. 26 (Yonhap) - The volume of cargo processed at South Korean ports an increase in August from a year earlier, due to an increase in the amount of charge of exports and imports, said Thursday, the Ministry of Oceans and Fishing.

The combined volume of the load that was in and out of seaports Koreans came to 108.75 million tons last month, an increase of 8.1 percent compared with the same period of 2012.

The increase was attributed mainly to increased by 7.3 percent year the amount of cargo exports and imports of the country to reach about 89.94 million tons, the ministry said.

"The growth was led by the country's main ports such as Busan, Gwangyang and Incheon, whose load was increased by 9.7, 3.8 and 25.1 percent year on year, respectively, due to increased exports and imports of textiles, petrochemicals and gas petrolífico "the ministry said in a press release.

In terms of container cargo, seaports of the country in August processed a total of 1.92 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEU, according to its acronym in English), an increase of 9.7 percent over the same period of 2012.

Busan, the country's largest seaport, located in the southeastern area of the peninsula, processed 1.45 million TEUs in August, up 8.2 percent year on year, as the number of transhipment cargo increased 12 percent year on year to 714,000 TEUs.

The amount of transshipment cargo refers to cargo processed in the country on its way to a final destination, because, often, to change of the transportation means.
