SEOUL, May 6 (Yonhap) - South Korea's two main mobile phone manufacturers, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, overtook U.S. rival Apple Inc. in terms of smartphone sales in the U.S. market in the first quarter of this year, data showed Monday industry.

According to data from research firm Strategy Analytics market, combined sales of smartphones from Samsung and LG in North America totaled 12.2 million units in the first three months, exceeding those of Apple, which were 11.9 million.

In terms of market share of smartphones in that region, Samsung and LG recorded a combined market share of 38.4 percent in the January-March period, one percent higher than Apple.

This trend is attributed mainly to sales of Apple smartphones considerably decreased compared quarter, while LG increased significantly.
